LITOMYŠL 2026: THE CITY AS A GALLERY
Smetana’s Art Litomyšl 2026 will begin on 12 June 2026 and will once again transform Litomyšl into a place for meeting with art. In this context, the Municipal Gallery Litomyšl is preparing four central exhibition projects, which will be loosely related to the main theme of the Smetana´s Litomyšl music festival – natura.
Smetana´s Art Litomyšl has long connected gallery spaces with the city’s architecture and public areas. Visitors can experience art not only in institutions, but also in streets, parks, and other urban locations.
FOUR CENTRAL EXHIBITIONS OF THE MUNICIPAL GALLERY LITOMYŠL
In the public space of the city, we will present an open-air exhibition by sculptor Jaroslav Róna, which will present a selection of the artist’s work from recent years in dialogue with the memory and atmosphere of selected places. Municipal Picture Gallery at the chateau will offer an exhibition Face It, focusing on portraiture and self-portraiture from the 19th century to the present day. The exhibition touches on the theme of human nature, identity and the ways in which people portray and perceive themselves. The Castle Brewery will present the international exhibition Resonance by Austrian artist Gerhard Flekatsch, examining the relationship between humans and nature through concepts of resonance, interaction, and spatial perception. Another international dimension will be brought by the project Out of Ostrale, presented in the Red Tower and the city’s exterior spaces. The exhibition will feature a selection of works from the Dresden contemporary art biennale OSTRALE, offering an external perspective on themes of corporeality, memory, and everyday life.
ART IN LITOMYŠL
In 2026, Smetana´s Art Litomyšl will once again involve other cultural institutions, galleries, and independent actors active in the city. Their exhibition projects will be part of the festival’s shared promotion, turning Litomyšl into a vibrant map of contemporary visual art throughout the summer.
