GALLERIES IN THE WINDOWS

Window Gallery is a new project of the Municipal Gallery Litomyšl, which arose from our need to present art in the public space of the city – naturally, unobtrusively and for free.

In the future, the gallery will be located on Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová Street, in a corner building with a facade facing Smetana Square. In the building where the doctor, writer and mayor of Litomyšl Dr. František Lašek used to live. It is here that a project is being created today that connects the history of the place with contemporary art, design and architecture.

THREE EMPTY SHOP WINDOWS

The gallery is based on three showcases on the facade of the house, which until recently served as product displays for Keralit. Today, they are empty – and therein lies their potential. At the request of František Lašek’s descendants, these shop windows were handed over to the town gallery.

However, the showcases are in no condition to house exhibitions – so we decided to breathe new life into them. Not by rebuilding them, but by sensitively rewriting their original function.

ARCHITECTURE AS A FRAME

We invited architects from Ateliér Mur studio to cooperate with us. And as it turned out, it was a great choice. Their architectural design, which works with a minimum of resources and yet remains strong, immediately appealed to us. The proposed architecture is not a dominant element in this design, but a silent frame – stepping back to let what will take place in the windows stand out. Each of the windows transforms into an autonomous exhibition space without in any way disturbing the character of the historic façade.

And it is this restraint that makes sense to us and supports our future curatorial intention.

THE YEAR THAT WAS NEEDED

We have been working on the project in the city gallery for over a year. We started with fundraising, continued with an architectural study, negotiations with the conservationists and the owners of the building. Each step has been lengthy, but very important.

And now, hopefully, we are slowly approaching the goal. We have all the necessary permits, the first two exhibition projects are ready and we have found a sponsor for the production of the new showcases – umdasch Story Design s.r.o.

JUST WALK BY AND STOP FOR A MOMENT

Window Gallery’s exhibition programme will focus on contemporary illustration, art, photography, design, architecture and technology. Our goal is to create exhibitions that are visually spare, timely and sensitively set in the window space.

We are close to the principle of shop windows – we would like a passer-by to come across our exhibition “by chance”, stop for a moment, let the exhibited object impress him or her and then move on.

The Window Gallery will be open 24 hours a day and free of charge. And perhaps that’s its greatest strength – it will be a natural part of the city and its everyday bustle. Just walk by and maybe stop for a moment.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

What started as an idea is coming to fruition after a year of preparation. That’s why, together with friends of the gallery, we decided to organize the second edition of the Fashion for Gallery Vol. 2 charity fashion bazaar.

Martina Zuzaňáková

The Lesikon (from the German word “lesen” = to read) is a German-language encyclopaedia compiled in 2010 by graphic artist Juli Gudehus under the title Das Lesikon der visuellen Kommunikation. The 3,000-page book offers an original and humorous version of a lexicon, dealing exclusively with concepts from the world of typography, design and advertising.

Juli Gudehusova worked on the encyclopaedia together with 627 authors for almost nine years and the result is 9704 entries, which are not arranged alphabetically but in groups according to their meaning. The book is unique mainly because of its broad scope. It includes concepts referring to the world of signs, printing, reproduction, advertising as well as to symbols from these categories. In Lesikon, we can simply find terms used by contemporary graphic designers and animators as well as historical context related to the topic – for example, the information that the first printed menu was printed for the Viennese restaurant “Zum roten Apfel” as early as 1784.

In the age of Wikipedia’s reign, Lesikon is an astonishing phenomenon, and in a way it is saving the medium of the printed book. Unlike classical lexicons, you can flip through it endlessly, make extracts and explore suggested secondary sources or literature.

The plant, charming with its different morphology and the colourful charm of its flowers, has always served as an object suitable for artistic representation. As the knowledge of the usefulness and medicinal effects of individual plants developed, the need to capture their form as faithfully as possible so that they could be found in nature according to these depictions grew.

In order for scientific illustration, or a scientific botanical illustration, to achieve its goal, i.e. to acquaint the viewer with the facts of science, its author should suppress in his artistic expression the subjective approach to the representation of a given scientific model. Based on a detailed examination of botanical depictions by the most important Czech botanical illustrators working during the 20th century, it can be concluded that the uniqueness and high quality of Czech botanical illustration is paradoxically based on the distinctive illustrative expressions of individual artistic personalities, which the Czech aesthetician and art theorist Dušan Šindelář groups under the unofficial term Czech Botanical School of Illustrators.[1]

Jiřina Kaplická, Roses by Michele Meilland, 1966

The original Czech botanical illustration by Adolf Kašpar can be seen in František Polívka’s four-volume work Illustrative Flora of the Lands of the Czech Crown, published between 1899 and 1904. It should be noted that the originality of Kašpar’s illustrative accompaniment was a notable exception in the production of the time; it was more common to supplement Czech botanical works with pictorial appendices taken from proven German models [1].[2]

A great impulse for the Czech production of botanical illustration to move away from German models was the first publication of Josef Mánes’ botanical study drawings in 1940. Mánes depicted plants sensitively and factually, his pen drawings are dynamic and characterized by the use of shape abbreviations [2].[3]

The botanical illustrations of Karel Svolinský are considered to be the legacy of Josef Mánes’ botanical drawings. The collaboration between this artist and the botanist František Antonín Novák resulted in three volumes of botanical keys, Plants 1 (1935), Mountain Plants (1937) and Plants 2 (1940) [3].

Anna Kavinová-Schustlerová created her botanical illustrations on the basis of sensitive observation and a light, glaze-like handling of colour, while František Procházka, on the other hand, used pen drawing to record plants with scientific accuracy. František Severa mastered the technique of watercolour in his botanical illustrations, and in the field of natural history drawing he is considered the successor of such artists as Václav Hollar, Antonín Navrátil, Josef Mánes and Karel Svolinský. His deep, richly coloured images have an almost magical effect [4].[5]

Jiřina Kaplicka’s illustrations of roses, cacti and flowering shrubs are objective and monumental. Kaplická crosses the boundaries of scientific illustration and her botanical depictions thus show features of a freer artistic creation. Particularly in the author’s illustrations of roses, one can notice her bravura handling of coloured watercolour valers, which she uses to sensitively distinguish the transparency of the flowers and their shiny or velvety matt surface interwoven with fine veining from the rich green of the stems and leaves [5].[6]

Similarly to the work of Jiřina Kaplicka, Ludmila Jiřincová’s botanical depictions are on the borderline between scientific and poetic, free illustration [6].[7]

Otto Ušák’s illustrations [7],[8] based on seemingly rough, generous brushstrokes, but with an atmospherically sparkling colouring, are contrasting. Otakar Zejbrlík concentrated in his pen drawings on the exact expression of plant structure. Květoslav Hísek, Karel Svolinský’s successor, on the other hand, approached his work with colour with delicacy, and he also handled his drawings with sensitive care [8].Věra Ničová-Urbanová and Ladislav Urban managed to reconcile the thin drawing, which records the striations of the surface, with a painterly detailed expression in their depictions [9 ].[10]

Jindřich Krejča found a balance between drawing and colour and complemented the depiction with pen-drawn details telling about the character of the plant. Vojtěch Štolfa complemented the pen drawing with an energetic hatch [10].[11] Zdenka Krejčová, following the example of her teacher Karel Svolinský, emphasized linear drawing, filled with expressive watercolours. Anna Skoumalová-Hadačová and Jarmila Haldová demonstrated their unique observation skills and their ability to translate complicated structures into pen and ink drawings and make them understandable for a wide range of viewers.

Academic painter Zdeněk Sklenář taught scientific illustration in his studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague during the 1970s and 1980s The work of Sklenář’s graduates, including Pavel Dvorský, Eva Hašková and Petr Melan, is similar to each other in terms of fine execution and high professional sophistication.

So as we can see, for domestic authors of botanical illustration of the 20th century, creative variability is typical. However, this in no way has a negative impact on the factuality and the resulting cognitive function of the resulting botanical illustrations.

At the end of our short introduction to the phenomenon of Czech botanical illustration of the 20th century, we can mention how the botanical illustrator proceeds in practice. Artists did not always use a living plant as the only model; some used older botanical depictions as a source of inspiration during the illustration process, while other artists used photographs as a source of inspiration. Sometimes the illustrators relied only on herbarium items or collection materials. In such cases, they had to revive their faded images and essentially bring them back to life, which was certainly a creative challenge for them.

It’s seven in the morning. 15. June. We sit on the still cold wall on the Water Walls and with a little embarrassment we squeeze into our fishing waders. We’re having a hard time, none of us have worn pants like that before. In a little while we will go down the Loučná river to get acquainted with the long-awaited art project. Its beginning is accompanied by the intense smell of rubber and the feeling of heavy legs. We move quite clumsily in trousers that almost reach our shoulders. When walking, we have to unnaturally lengthen our stride to be able to move in them at all, and to keep up with our two guides – artists Nikola Šrubařová and Karina Brabcová. We are participating in their latest work Biotop Loučná, which they have prepared for this year’s exhibition Plan B.

Only a few days ago, one of the works arrived in our gallery by courier. Narrow blue zine printed on recycled paper. It is full of photographs, drawings, notes and snippets of interviews. It maps the river Loučná and smells of a printer.

As we walk to the starting point of today’s walk, we all mentally reflect on the nature of Nikolina and Karina’s project. We know almost nothing about it yet. We only know about the narrow blue booklet and we know that they both visited Litomyšl several times, had conversations about the river with biologist Lubor Urbánek and Antonín Dokoupil, who is in charge of the town’s development, and walked the river in rubber pants. Today we will enter their artistic project and become part of the creative process.

We came to the raft. In rubber trousers, already a little less clumsy, we walk up the steps to Loučná near the pub Za vodou, where the painter Josef Voleský was born. What would this artist, for whom the mastery of the means of painting was above all in the work of art, have thought of us, when in the work in which we are participating today only the pen drawings in the blue book remain of the whole great chapter of painting?

We’re waist-deep in water. We can feel how cold it is. Finally, we learn the details of the Loučná Biotope project. While “mapping” it, Karina and Nikola crossed the river several times from Benátky to Lidl department store. They recorded the depth and colour of the water, the river bed, the river channel and the materials of which it is built, the relationship of the river to the settlement, observed life in the water and on the adjacent banks, took photographs and drawings of plants. Today, the artists give us their experiences from their research. She teaches us how to recognize that the river is healthy and shares with us her own feelings from her individual visits to Litomyšl. The first one, in spring, was characterized by the enthusiasm for the beautiful city and its architecture. The other is a slightly more critical view of the river itself and how little the river is part of the everyday life of the city’s inhabitants. In the blue book, this knowledge is mapped out in terms of “Recreation Deficit” or “We move in the city, and we hardly see the other city”.

We wade downstream together. We learn where what kind of birds nest, where what grows or where the muddy subsoil alternates with the rocky one. We write down our own impressions in the handmade notebooks we received from the artists. We observe how ambient sounds change. In some places we can barely hear each other, in others there is a great silence. We pass under the new overpass and the building appears even taller and more massive from our new perspective. Fortunately, it still remains within the scale of our city. Every now and then one of us steps on the soft muddy ground and staggers. We talk all the time, but the pace of the conversation is slow. We are aware that the slower pace of the conversation is set by the authors of the happening themselves. They are crossing the river for several times and they know very well that they are acting as uninvited guests. Even today they do not intend to disturb the fragile river ecosystem in any way. We’re adapting. We’re strangers here too. By quietly observing, we try to understand the surrounding nature and water. We experience very unusual, strong and pleasant feelings.

We ask women artists about the theme of ecology in their works. They describe their ongoing Feedback Project, which deals with soil erosion in Iceland. The theme of soil is ever present in their work. For the exhibition in Zlín, called Earth Beneath Our Feet, for example, they created a haptic material laboratory of Zlín’s nature. The online exhibition “Soil, Clay, Earth” again visualized the contemporary relationship between humans and soil.

Our morning walk through Loučná ends after about two hours. The river got progressively deeper, darker and colder. We get out of the water on the shore near the Penny Market in Litomyšl. Each with their own feelings and thoughts jumping over each other. In a head that is used to sorting through information and searching for answers to questions about the artistic quality of a work, it is boiling. After a few steps on land, however, everything suddenly falls into place. Nikola and Karina create artworks that are meant to cultivate our thinking, and the purpose of the visual images they create or mediate is to bring into our field of vision issues that deserve attention or that for some reason remain hidden from our attention. Their soil mapping brought public attention to the soil and drew attention to invasive land management. A similar approach was chosen by the artists here in Litomyšl. However, soil has been replaced by water, which is reduced in the popular mind to a purely utilitarian thing. We don’t care much about its protection or its future. Through an unusual experience in the form of a walk on water, both artists drew our attention to this topic in a playful yet very intense way. After flipping through the blue zine and taking today’s walk, we cherish a sense of beauty and joy that is similar to the feelings we experience when looking at some of the great works of art in a gallery, for example. Today, however, water and nature have replaced the means of art. Their constancy, fragility and liveliness.
